What sort of world we are leaving for the children? And why do so few
people care?

The world is a very small place
The earth is 4.6 billion years old, man kind has existed for a couple of million
and it has taken a few hundred years to swamp the planet. There are estimated
to be about 6.7 billion of us (in 2008).
"The Earth will be ok, it's the human race that's in trouble!"
(facebook group)
We are a virus spreading over the planet, changing it, making nasty fumes.
The environment will be ok, life will be ok, the earth will cleanse itself
and life will evolve, mankind will be a victim of his own progress and technology.
So much work the human race has done, so little we have learnt.
The ocean conveyor belt is the flow of the sea from pole to pole which, among
other things, oxygenates the seas. One extinction resulted from this flow
stopping. The melting of the ice caps could stop this flow.
"Buy less products: save yourself" (facebook
group)
Save the human race, buy less things! Do you really need more stuff? Each
product is more fossil fuel burnt. Most products contain something which cannot
be regenerated. Most of the products produced by humans are generated from
the dead life on the planet: oil is just the remains of life past. Your computer
needs oil to be made, your flatscreen uses a raw material which is actually
going to run out fairly soon. Do we really need new stuff all the time?
"EXTINCTION!" (facebook
group)
"Estimates of the number of major mass extinctions in the last 540 million
years range from as few as five to more than twenty."
We live in an age of mass extinction, difference with this one is: the human
race is causing it!
"Modern human civilisation based on burning Fossil Fuel"
Products and modern civilisation is based on the need to burn Fossil Fuel
for electric and transport: so based on the need to burn animals long since
dead then (coal and oil). Not to mention burning down the rainforests!
Hope?
There is really little hope that many species will not go extinct and the
human population is in for a tough time. There are too many of us and the
planet can't hold us all, the population keeps increasing and the eco system
will start to break down. There is no real hope. We all need to try none-the-less.
In another 5 million years nothing will really have mattered. The world will
recover, it's just our here and now which is in an impossible mess...
What has Justin Tuijl done?
I have always fitted energy saving bulbs, I cycle to work, I choose recyled,
I do not to buy many products
